The Amazing Effects of the Active Ingredient “Niacinamide”

Have you heard about the ingredient “Niacinamide,” which is used in the newly released medicated whitening and wrinkle-improving cream? You might have come across this term more frequently lately.

Have you ever wondered, “What effects does it actually have?” or “Why is it effective?” In this article, I will provide a detailed introduction to niacinamide.

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a type of vitamin B. It promotes the synthesis of ceramides in the upper layers of the epidermis, enhancing the skin’s ability to retain moisture and supporting its barrier function. This water-soluble ingredient has gained attention in recent years as it has been recognized by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as an effective component.

Effects of niacinamide

As an active ingredient, niacinamide primarily offers three key benefits.

① Wrinkle improvement

Are you aware of the factors that cause wrinkles to increase as we age? It is believed that the depletion of collagen in the skin over the years is a major cause. Niacinamide has the beneficial effect of improving wrinkles, which is particularly welcome for aging skin. This is because niacinamide promotes collagen production, which enhances skin firmness and supports skin elasticity. Additionally, by increasing the collagen in the skin, it helps to keep the skin hydrated and can prevent wrinkles caused by dryness. Niacinamide is a desirable ingredient for aging skin, providing support for a plump and radiant complexion.

② Whitening/stain prevention

Unexpected facial spots can be quite noticeable, and there’s a limit to how much makeup can cover them. We all want to do something about them, don’t we? Spots are a type of hyperpigmentation caused by the accumulation of melanin, which is produced in response to skin damage from ultraviolet rays and other factors. When the skin’s turnover process fails to manage this melanin properly, it results in visible spots.

Remarkably, niacinamide is known to have an inhibitory effect on melanin production. It helps to regulate the activity of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, particularly when exposed to sunlight or other triggers. By reducing the excessive production of melanin and preventing it from being transported to the skin’s surface, niacinamide can help achieve a brighter, more even complexion.

③ Prevention of rough skin and acne

One concern during seasonal changes is skin irritation. When our skin becomes irritated, makeup doesn’t apply smoothly, and even when it heals, it can leave behind pigmentation. I always think about maintaining healthy skin to stay beautiful at all times.

One cause of skin irritation is the lack of ceramides. Ceramides fill the gaps between skin cells, helping to retain moisture and protect the skin from dryness. They also play a crucial role in the skin’s barrier function, protecting it from external irritants such as friction and UV rays. However, ceramides decrease with age, and by our 50s, we have about half as many as we did in our 20s. This reduction weakens the barrier function, making the skin more prone to dryness and external irritation, leading to skin problems.

Niacinamide helps to increase ceramides, preventing the evaporation of moisture from the skin and protecting it from external irritants and attacks. When our skin is healthy, makeup applies beautifully, boosting our confidence and mood.

Gentle action that is easy on sensitive skin

With so many benefits, you might wonder if niacinamide is too strong or has severe side effects. Rest assured, niacinamide is much gentler compared to “retinol,” which is known for its effectiveness in anti-aging care. Those with sensitive skin who find retinol too harsh can still use niacinamide.

Niacinamide works gradually to accelerate cell proliferation and differentiation. This enhances the production of many substances involved in the skin’s barrier function during cell differentiation. However, because individual responses can vary, it is advisable to start with a small amount if you have any concerns.

Duration Until Effects Are Seen

As for whether the effects are immediate, it’s not something you’ll feel right away. The skin has a cycle called “turnover,” where it renews itself, and it’s challenging to see immediate results upon starting use.

In healthy individuals in their 20s, turnover typically takes about 28 days. However, as we age, metabolism slows down, and the turnover cycle lengthens. It’s said that turnover in one’s 40s takes around 45 days.

When trying skincare products containing niacinamide, it’s recommended to continue use for about six weeks, even if you don’t immediately feel the effects.

Summary

The active ingredient niacinamide contains many beneficial components for the skin. While the effects may not be immediate, please don’t give up and continue use for 45 days. I hope that even a little of niacinamide’s charm has been conveyed.
